China Apostille Services – U.S. Document Legalization
Apostille for U.S. Documents Used in China
Kathryn's Mobile Notary & Apostille provides apostille services for documents used in China, including personal, educational, and business documents. Services are available by appointment and through mail-in apostille processing for clients located anywhere in the United States or abroad.
China Apostille Requirements
China became a Hague Apostille Convention member in 2023. As a result, U.S. documents intended for use in China generally require a Hague Apostille, rather than consular legalization.
Eligible documents commonly include:
- •U.S. birth and marriage certificates
- •FBI background checks
- •Powers of attorney
- •Affidavits and sworn statements
- •Business and corporate documents
- •Educational records (depending on receiving authority)
The required apostille is issued by the Secretary of State (for state-issued documents) or the U.S. Department of State (for federal documents).
Important China-Specific Considerations
While China now recognizes Hague Apostilles, receiving authorities in China may impose additional requirements, such as:
- •Certified translations
- •Specific document formatting
- •Recent issuance dates
Clients are responsible for confirming document acceptance requirements with the receiving authority in China.
Mail-In & Expedited Service
Mail-in apostille service is available for China-bound documents. Expedited processing may be available depending on document type and issuing authority.

Frequently Asked Questions – China Apostille
Q: Can I use a U.S. birth certificate in China after an apostille?
A: Yes. China recognizes Hague Apostilles as of 2023. A properly apostilled U.S. birth certificate is generally accepted, subject to local authority requirements.
Q: Does China require consular legalization or an apostille?
A: China currently recognizes Hague Apostilles, so consular legalization is generally no longer required for eligible documents.
Q: Can FBI background checks be apostilled for use in China?
A: Yes. FBI background checks may be apostilled through the U.S. Department of State for use in China.
Q: Do documents need to be translated into Chinese?
A: Some receiving authorities in China may require certified Chinese translations. Translation requirements are determined by the requesting institution in China.
Q: Can I submit my China apostille request by mail?
A: Yes. Mail-in apostille services are available nationwide for China-bound documents.
Q: Do you handle apostille and document authentication for countries outside the Hague Convention?
A: Yes. In addition to Hague Apostille countries, we assist with document authentication for non-Hague destinations, including Taiwan and other regions that require additional certification steps instead of a Hague Apostille.
